Forever Wasn't You

First of all, let me start by saying that I honestly have no idea which relationship spawned this little ditty. And no, I don't really have anything else remotely like this in my oeuvre. It's a lot like when "They Might Be Giants" say, "There's only two songs in me, and I just wrote the third..."

In all my life I have written what seems to be one of anything: one graduation song, one instrumental, one lullaby, and one sort of "I'll just wait right here for you, shall I?" sort of song that really requires a good guitar or banjo backup to realize its full potential. So, this is the only sort of polyphonic, Sweet Adelines, Barbershop type song I am likely to ever write. And now that box.net allows for free 1 GB of shareable uploads, I can now inflict it upon you:

Forever Wasn't You
You've come to say goodbye
(Guess it wasn't you)
Hate to see me cry
(Guess it wasn't you)
Still, it's worse to lie
(Guess it wasn't you)
Thought I'd found forever, but forever wasn't you

She's just another name
(Guess it wasn't you)
Just some faceless dame
(Guess it wasn't you)
Still you're not to blame
(Guess it wasn't you)
Thought I'd found forever, but forever wasn't you

Oh, but someday, maybe one day
She'll show you the door (the door)
You'll realize what a fool you've been
And look to me once more!

Then you'll come to me
(Guess it wasn't you)
Get on bended knee
(Guess it wasn't you)
For my love you'll plea
(Guess it wasn't you)
Thought I'd found forever, but forever wasn't you
Oh you thought I'd wait forever
But forever wasn't you

Enjoy!

You know, one of the things that I adore about you is that you occasionally use words like "oeuvre" that require me to reach for my dictionary.

I adore that quality.

I remember who it was about (it wasn't me). It's a sweet song. It's been bouncing around our iTunes library for years and I play it every now and then (I just haven't toyed with the ID3 tags to properly file it in the library because it's not my track to play with).
